IMO vs iOM vs UIMO — which Olympiad should a Class 4 student attempt first?
Three popular Olympiads, three different flavours. Here's a no-nonsense comparison so you can pick the right one as a starting Olympiad.
Most Class 4 parents ask the same first question — "should we just register for everything?". You can, but you don't have to. Each exam tests different things.
SOF IMO — the safe starting point
The IMO is the most widely-attempted school Olympiad in India. Its biggest advantage is the Student Performance Report — a topic-wise breakdown of how your child did, including how their peers performed on each question. That feedback alone is worth the participation.
Pick this if: it's your child's first Olympiad and you want benchmarking.
SilverZone iOM — more reasoning-heavy
The iOM weights mental ability and logical reasoning more than the IMO. The HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) section gives bonus marks for harder questions.
Pick this if: your child enjoys puzzles, riddles and pattern questions.
Unified UIMO — closer to school syllabus
UIMO sticks closer to the school curriculum (NCERT/state board) and tests application rather than tricks. Less reasoning, more arithmetic depth.
Pick this if: your child is strong in school maths but newer to Olympiad-style problem solving.
A common path
A reasonable Class 4 schedule: attempt IMO and CREST in the same year (both online or hybrid). Add iOM if your child enjoys reasoning. Save ITO IMO for when your child has done at least one full Olympiad cycle.
