SOF IMO Class 3: What To Expect In The Paper

A look at what really turns up on the SOF IMO Class 3 Level 1 paper: where the marks live, the five problem types that repeat every year, and where to focus first.

If your child is taking SOF IMO Class 3 this year, this is what to expect on the paper.

We went through the Level 1 papers from the last few years, and the shape of the exam barely changes. The same sections, the same balance of topics, and the same handful of problem types come back every time. Once you can see that shape, the paper stops feeling like a guessing game.

The 60-Second Answer

A few areas carry most of the marks in SOF IMO Class 3 Level 1.

Logical Reasoning is the largest single block at about 29%, which is ten questions on every paper. If your child is unsure here, nearly a third of the exam is at risk before they reach a single sum.

Measurement is the next heavyweight at about 16%, and it is broader than the name suggests. It folds together length, weight, capacity, time and temperature, so clocks, rulers and weighing scales all live in this one bucket. These are quick marks once the units feel familiar.

The rest of the paper is spread fairly evenly across money, fractions, number sense, data handling and geometry. None of them dominates, but money and data handling are the two most children leave under-practised.

If you fix only two things this term, make them Reasoning and Measurement.

The Paper Format

  • 35 MCQs in 60 minutes, four options each

The four sections are:

  • Section 1 · Logical Reasoning · Q1 to Q10 · 10 marks
  • Section 2 · Mathematical Reasoning · Q11 to Q20 · 10 marks
  • Section 3 · Everyday Mathematics · Q21 to Q30 · 10 marks
  • Section 4 · Achievers Section · Q31 to Q35 · 10 marks (2 marks each)

Keep an eye on that last section. Five questions, worth double, and clearly harder than everything before them. Two children with the same maths can end up far apart on rank purely on how the Achievers questions went.

Where The Marks Live

SOF groups the paper into four sections by the style of question. It helps to look at it a second way, by the skill each question tests, because skill is what your child sits down and practises. Section 1 is all reasoning. The other three are maths, and they break down into the topics below.

Notice how much of the paper sits outside plain arithmetic. SOF IMO Class 3 is not a race to add and subtract quickly. It leans on reading a problem carefully, spotting a pattern, telling the time, and making sense of a picture or a graph.

The Five Problems You'll See On Almost Every Paper

Look across the papers and the same question shapes keep returning. Get comfortable with these five and much of the paper looks after itself.

Clock and calendar questions are a fixture. Reading a clock face, working out how long something lasts, or which day a date falls on. "A cartoon starts at 4:15 and runs for 1 hour 40 minutes, when does it end?" These reward a child who can count forward in steps rather than reaching for a formula.

Measurement in mixed units turns up again and again. Comparing 2 kg 300 g with 2350 g, or adding 1 m 40 cm to 75 cm. The difficulty is rarely the arithmetic, it is keeping the units straight, so it pays to slow down and line them up.

Mirror images appear on almost every paper, and they are always visual. A shape or a letter, and the job is to pick its reflection. There is no way to reason these out from a description, which is why children who only practise from text-only books meet them cold in the exam.

Pictographs with a key are a quiet trap in the data section. One symbol stands for two, or five, or ten, and that little key at the bottom decides the whole answer. A child who reads the picture but forgets the key gets a clean method and a wrong number.

Achievers True and False shows up without fail. Three or four statements to judge, with an answer like "T, F, T". Get one wrong and the two marks are gone, so this is the place to slow right down.

Beating The Achievers Section

There is a quirk in the Achievers questions that catches out a lot of able children.

These five questions rarely ask one clean thing. They arrive in two shapes. The first is multi-statement True and False, where three or four statements are bundled into one question and every single one has to be right to score. The second is Match the Following, a grid pairing Column I with Column II, where one wrong link sinks the whole answer.

The bundling is the trap. A child who understands most of the content can still score zero, because one small sub-statement went the wrong way. It punishes "mostly right", which does feel a little unfair.

So teach the habit that beats it. Treat every statement as its own little question, and write T or F next to each before looking at the four options. If one statement is clearly false, cross off every option that calls it true, and half the choices usually vanish at once. And do not let the size of these questions frighten anyone. Four short statements are almost always gentler than one dense word problem from the Everyday Maths section. They only look hard because they are stacked together.

Section 1 Deserves Its Own Note

Ten of the thirty-five questions are Logical Reasoning, and over half of them come with a figure: mirror images, embedded shapes, figure grids and pattern sequences. This is exactly where text-only prep falls short, because a mirror-image question means nothing as a paragraph of words.

The reasoning types that keep coming up:

  • Number and shape patterns
  • Analogy and classification
  • Alphabet test
  • Coding and decoding
  • Ranking test
  • Grouping of figures and figure matrix (always visual)
  • Mirror images (always visual)
  • Embedded figures (visual, a newer addition)
  • Clock and calendar

The practical point is simple. If your practice papers do not carry real figures, exam day becomes the first time your child sees a proper mirror-image or figure-matrix question. That is not where you want the first meeting to be.

If Your Child Clears Level 1

Level 2 changes the balance. Across SOF, the shift from Level 1 to Level 2 is the same at every class: the Logical Reasoning section shrinks sharply, and the freed marks move into the maths topics. The reasoning that carried a quarter of Level 1 barely features, while measurement, number work and data handling do more of the lifting.

The common mistake is to keep grinding reasoning after Level 1 is in the bag, for a Level 2 paper where it hardly appears. Once qualification is secure, shift the effort onto the maths chapters instead.

Where To Start This Week

New to SOF IMO Class 3? A sensible first week looks like this.

Sit one paper untimed, with no pressure, just to see where your child stands today. Then choose the two weakest areas and stay there. For most children that turns out to be Logical Reasoning and Measurement.

Go gently on the Achievers section at first. These questions reward thinking, and a Class 3 child who meets them against a ticking clock too early will simply panic and guess. Build the understanding first, and save timed practice for the last few weeks.
