SOF IMO Class 4: What To Expect In The Paper
We looked at every question across 10 SOF IMO Class 4 Level 1 papers. Here's where the marks live, and the five patterns that show up in almost every paper.

If your child is taking SOF IMO Class 4 this year, this is what to expect on the paper.
We read through every question in ten official Level 1 papers: Set A and Set B, 2021 through 2025, 350 questions in all. The same topics come back year after year, and so do the same handful of problem types. Once you see the pattern, the paper stops feeling like a mystery.
The 60-Second Answer
Three things carry most of the marks in SOF IMO Class 4 Level 1.
Logical Reasoning is the biggest at 29%, which is ten questions on every paper. If your child is shaky here, a quarter of the exam is gone before they open a single maths problem.
Measurement and Geometry together are another 28%: clocks, unit conversion, symmetry, perimeter. These are quick marks once the format is familiar, and most of them come with a figure.
Everything else shares the remaining 43%. The one to watch inside that group is Numeration, at 11%, because Roman numerals and place-value puzzles trip up children who never practised them.
If you fix only two things this term, make it Reasoning and Measurement.
The Paper Format
- 35 MCQs in 60 minutes, four options each
- No negative marking, no calculator
- 40 marks in total, across four sections
The four sections are:
- Section 1 · Logical Reasoning · Q1–10 · 10 marks
- Section 2 · Mathematical Reasoning · Q11–20 · 10 marks
- Section 3 · Everyday Mathematics · Q21–30 · 10 marks
- Section 4 · Achievers Section · Q31–35 · 10 marks (2 marks each)
Pay attention to that last section. Five questions, double the marks, and noticeably harder than anything before them. Two children with the same maths often finish miles apart on rank because of how the Achievers questions went.
Where The Marks Live
SOF sorts the paper into four sections by question style. We took the same 350 questions and re-sorted them by the maths skill each one tests, because skill is what your child actually sits down and practises. Section 1 lines up neatly with our Patterns & Reasoning topic. Sections 2 to 4 are all maths, and we've split them into the seven content topics below.

The number that surprises most parents is at the bottom of that list. Plain adding and subtracting is the smallest slice of the whole paper. SOF IMO Class 4 is not a speed test on sums. It is checking whether a child can reason through a problem, notice a pattern, and read a diagram.
The Five Problems You'll See On Almost Every Paper
Sort the 350 questions and the same shapes keep coming up. Get comfortable with these five and qualification looks after itself.
Roman numeral arithmetic shows up in roughly four papers out of five, and it is not just conversion. Children have to add and subtract in Roman numerals, so CMXLIX − DCCXC is a real question. Teach Roman numerals as something you calculate with, not a chart to memorise.
Fast or slow clocks turn up in about nine papers out of ten. "A clock is 50 minutes fast. What is the true time after 2 hours 15 minutes?" That needs clock reading and mental subtraction in one move. A couple of these a week pays off out of all proportion to the effort.
Symbol equations are a regular fixture: △ + ★ + ★ + ★ + ★ = 120, then ★ + ★ + ★ − △ = 55, find ★. It is algebra wearing a costume. The first time a child cracks one the rest tend to fall into place.
Perimeter of a shaded compound figure is another repeat. A grid with some squares shaded, and the job is to trace the boundary. No formula rescues you here. It rewards careful counting, and it catches the children who reach for a formula out of habit.
Achievers True/False appears on every paper without fail. Three statements to judge as true or false, with answers like "T, F, T". One wrong call and two marks are gone, so this is the place to slow right down.
Beating The Achievers Section
There is a structural quirk to the Achievers questions that most parents never spot, and it explains a lot of lost marks.
These questions almost never ask one clean thing. They come in two shapes, over and over. The first is multi-statement True/False, where three or four statements are bundled into a single question and your child has to get every one right to earn the mark. The second is Match the Following, a grid pairing Column I with Column II, where a single wrong pairing takes down the whole answer.
The bundling is the trap. A child who knows 80% of the content can still walk away with zero, because one buried sub-statement went the wrong way. These questions punish "mostly right", which feels unfair, and honestly it is a little unfair.
So teach the habit that beats it. Solve every statement on its own, as if it were a separate question, and write T or F beside each one before looking at the options. If even one statement is clearly false, cross out every option that marks it true, and usually half the options disappear on the spot. And don't let the size of the question rattle anyone. Four bundled statements are almost always easier than one dense Everyday-Maths word problem. It only looks frightening because they're stacked together.
Section 1 Deserves Its Own Note
Ten of the 35 questions are Logical Reasoning, and around seven of those arrive with a figure: mirror images, embedded figures, direction maps, shape sequences. This is exactly where text-only prep books fall short, because a mirror-image question makes no sense as a paragraph of words.
The reasoning types that keep coming up:
- Number and shape patterns (1–2 per paper)
- Alphabet test (1 per paper)
- Coding and decoding (1 per paper)
- Ranking test (1 per paper)
- Mirror images (0–1 per paper, always visual)
- Embedded figures (0–1 per paper, always visual)
- Direction sense (0–1 per paper, always a compass map)
- Analogy and classification (0–1 per paper)
The practical takeaway is simple. If your practice papers don't carry real figures, exam day will be the first time your child ever sees a proper mirror-image question. That's not where you want the first encounter to happen.
If Your Child Clears Level 1
Level 2 plays by different rules. Across the Class 4 Level 2 papers we analysed:
- Logical Reasoning drops from 29% to almost nothing
- Numeration & Place Value climbs from 11% to 19%, with Roman numerals and factor puzzles
- Measurement stays heavy at 19%
- Geometry rises to 16%
Here's the mistake we see most often: a child clears Level 1 and keeps grinding reasoning for Level 2, where it barely appears. Once qualification is in the bag, move the effort to Numeration, Geometry and Data Handling instead.
Where To Start This Week
New to SOF IMO Class 4? A sensible first week looks like this.
Sit one paper untimed, with no pressure, just to see where your child stands today. Then pick the two weakest areas and stay there; for most children in our data that turns out to be Logical Reasoning and Measurement.
Practise reasoning with actual figures rather than descriptions of them. Mirror images, direction maps, compass problems and symmetry grids only make sense on the page. And go gently on the Achievers section at first. These questions reward thinking, and a Class 4 child who meets them against a ticking clock too early will simply panic and guess. Build the understanding first. Save the timed practice for the last three weeks before the exam, once the ideas have settled.

What is the format of the SOF IMO Class 4 paper?
SOF IMO Class 4 Level 1 is 35 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes for 40 marks, with four options each, no negative marking and no calculator. It runs across four sections: Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics and a short Achievers section worth double marks.
