How it works
👀 What's going on?
A picture can stand in for a number, like a secret box holding a value. When two pictures share a sum and you know one of them, the other cannot hide for long.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the two lines above. The first is an equation with two symbols; the second tells you what one symbol is worth. Put the known value into the first line and the other symbol's value drops out.
- 1.Read the value you are given for one symbol.
- 2.Replace that symbol with its number in the main equation.
- 3.Work out the other symbol so the sum is correct.
✍️ Try it
If 🍎 + 🍌 = 7 and 🍎 = 4, what is 🍌? Put in 🍎 = 4, so 4 + 🍌 = 7. That means 🍌 = 3.
⚠️ Watch out
The same picture always has the same value. Swap in the number you are told, then solve — do not guess a new value for a picture you already know.
