A near-double is just one more than a double.
6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 = 13, one more.
How it works

5 + 5 is a double. But what about 5 + 6?
💡 Here's the trick
A double adds a number to itself. A near-double is just one more than a double.
6 + 6 = 12 is a double. So 6 + 7 = 13, just one more.

Use doubles: 8 + 8 = 16, so 8 + 9 = 17.

A near-double is the double plus one, not plus two.
