Letter Arrangement: Unscramble the Word
Today's big idea
Use the category hint (animal, fruit, colour) to narrow the letters to one real word.
Every letter is used once, and the hint fixes which word they form.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Someone has jumbled the letters of a word, and now they spell nothing at all. HSIF stares back at you. Give it ten seconds and FISH appears.
💡 Here's the trick
The panel above scrambles RIGTE and hands you one hint: animal. That hint does the heavy lifting. Instead of trying dozens of orderings, you run through animals you know until one fits the letters, and TIGER fits.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Read the hint under the panel above, such as animal, fruit or colour.
- 2.Say the scrambled letters slowly and list words from that group.
- 3.Check your word uses every given letter, no more and no fewer.
✍️ Try it
Which animal hides in the letters NOIL? Now the harder one: which fruit hides in EPARG?
NOIL holds the letters L, I, O and N, and the only animal there is LION. EPARG holds G, R, A, P and E, and the fruit hiding in them is GRAPE.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking any arrangement that reads like a word will score. The same letters often hide two real words, even though only one fits the hint. NOIL also spells LOIN, and POT also spells TOP, so the hint is what decides. Match the hint or you have the wrong word.
🌟 Why this matters
Anagram puzzles, crosswords and word games at home all run on this exact move. It also helps when you are rebuilding a long word you are trying to spell. Saying the letters out loud slowly is what shakes the word loose.
Exam tip: Count the letters in your chosen word against the letters given, because one spare letter means it is wrong.
