Water Image: Reflection in a Pond
Today's big idea
Water swaps top for bottom, so a 6 comes back as a backwards 9 rather than a 9.
Near misses are the trap here, since a backwards 9 is not a 9 at all.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
A tree standing at the edge of a still pond appears again upside down in the water. A water image is that reflection, and it flips a shape the opposite way round from a mirror.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the reflection above. Water swaps top for bottom and leaves left as left. A shape whose top and bottom halves match comes back unchanged. One whose halves differ comes back looking wrong, not like some other neat shape.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Picture the water line running under the shape above.
- 2.Ask what is at the top and what is at the bottom, ignoring left and right.
- 3.Swap those two and read what you are left with.
✍️ Try it
What is the water image of the capital letter B? Then: what is the water image of the digit 6?
B has matching top and bottom halves, so it comes back unchanged. The 6 does not. Flipping it puts the loop on top and the tail at the bottom left, giving a backwards 9 rather than a 9.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking a flipped 6 gives you a 9. It very nearly does, and that is the trap. A real 9 has its tail on the right and the flipped 6 has its tail on the left. The two are mirror images of each other, not the same digit.
🌟 Why this matters
Reflections in water, in a polished table or in a puddle all work this way round. Knowing which way a shape has been flipped is what stops you naming the wrong one.
