Remainders in Real Life

Read the story to decide what to do with the leftover: round up, keep it, or drop it.
26 children in cars of 4 → 7 cars, because the last 2 still need a ride.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Twenty-six children need cars, and each car holds 4. Divide and you get 6 with 2 left over. But 6 cars leave 2 children on the pavement, so the real answer is 7. The leftover, not the division, decides it.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the packing above. When a division does not come out exactly, the remainder is a real thing you must deal with. Sometimes you round UP because the leftovers still need a place; sometimes the remainder IS the answer; sometimes you just drop it.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Do the division and note the remainder.
- 2.Read the question again: does the leftover need its own group, is it the answer, or does it not matter?
- 3.Round up, keep the remainder, or ignore it to match the story.
✍️ Try it
26 children ride in cars of 4 — how many cars? Then: 26 sweets are shared among 4 children — how many are left over?
26 ÷ 4 = 6 remainder 2. For the cars you round up to 7, because the last 2 children still need a ride. For the sweets the leftover is the answer: 2 are left.
⚠️ Watch out
Do not always drop the remainder. If the leftovers still need seats, boxes or bags, one more group is required — dropping it strands them.
