Concept 5 of 7
Letter Arrangement: Unscramble the Word
Today's big idea
Use the category hint to narrow the jumbled letters to one real word.
Think of category words first, then keep the one that uses your exact letters.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
A jumbled word looks impossible until you notice the hint sitting beside it. That hint is not decoration. It is most of the answer.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the puzzle above. Those letters could be arranged plenty of ways, but the hint says animal, and only one arrangement of them is an animal. Think of words in the category first, then check which one uses exactly the letters you were given.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Read the category hint on the picture above before you even look at the letters.
- 2.Think of words in that category and test them against the letters you have.
- 3.Check every letter gets used exactly once, with none left spare.
✍️ Try it
Rearrange R, I, G, T, E into an animal. Then rearrange N, O, L, M, E into a fruit.
R, I, G, T, E makes TIGER, using all five letters once each. N, O, L, M, E makes LEMON. Testing category words against your letters is far quicker than trying every possible order.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking any word that fits the category must be right. It also has to use your exact letters, every one and no extras. A word that fits the meaning but not the letters is a trap.
🌟 Why this matters
Crosswords, word searches and anagram games all work like this, and so does spotting a misspelt word on a page. Reading the clue before the letters saves the most time.
Exam tip: Count the letters first, because the length alone rules out most of the words that come to mind.
