Calendar Walker: Days from Now

1

Today's big idea

Peel off the full weeks first, because only the leftover days move you.

Days repeat every 7, so drop whole weeks and step only the leftover days.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

What day will it be 100 days from now? You are not going to count 100 days one at a time. The week repeating every 7 days does nearly all of the work for you.

💡 Here's the trick

Peel off full weeks, walk only the leftoverSunMonTueWedstartThuFriSatendToday = Wednesday. Walk 3 days.Thu → Fri → SatAnswer: SaturdayBig number? 7 is one full week. Only the leftover matters.

Look at the walk above. Today is Wednesday, and 3 days on takes you Thursday, Friday, Saturday. For a bigger number, peel off the full weeks first. Every 7 days lands you back on the same weekday, so only the leftover ever matters.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Split the number of days into full weeks of 7 plus a leftover, as the picture above walks only the leftover.
  2. 2.Ignore the full weeks completely, because they change nothing at all.
  3. 3.Walk the leftover days on from today.

✍️ Try it

Today is Friday. What day is it 16 days from now? And what day was it 9 days ago?

16 is two full weeks plus 2, so walk 2 on from Friday to reach Sunday. Going back 9 days is one full week plus 2, so walk 2 backwards from Friday to reach Wednesday. Backwards works the same way, counting the other direction.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking today counts as day one. It does not. Two days from Friday is Sunday rather than Saturday, because the counting starts on the day after today.

🌟 Why this matters

Working out which day your birthday falls on, when a library book is due back, or how long until the holidays all use this. The number can be enormous while the work stays tiny.
Exam tip: Divide by 7 and keep only the remainder, because that remainder is the entire calculation.

Quanta solves it

“Watch how I think through one of these — then you try.”

THE PROBLEM

“Today is Thursday. What day will it be 4 days from now?”

  1. 1

    Small walk — just count

4 is less than 7, so walk 4 days directly.

  2. 2

    Walk from Thursday

    Fri → Sat → Sun → Mon.

  3. 3

    Answer ✓

4 days from Thursday = Monday

Now you try one — same steps, different story 👇
