Water Image: Reflection in a Pond

Today's big idea

A water image swaps top for bottom, so a 6 comes back as a backwards 9 and not a 9.

Shapes whose top half already matches their bottom half come back unchanged.

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Stand at the edge of a still pond and the trees hang upside down in the water. Their tops point downwards, but nothing has swapped sides. The tree on your left is still on your left.

💡 Here's the trick

The top becomes the bottom and the bottom becomes the top. Left and right never move at all. A shape comes back unchanged when its top half already matches its bottom half.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Draw a water line straight along the bottom of the shape in the picture above.
  2. 2.Flip the shape over that line, so the top drops to the bottom.
  3. 3.Leave the left and the right exactly where they are, then read the new shape.

✍️ Try it

Hold a capital M above the water line. Then hold up a capital B. What does each one become?

The two points of the M now hang downwards, so it becomes W. The B has a top half that already matches its bottom half, so it comes back as B.

⚠️ Watch out

Everyone wants to say a 6 turns into a 9. It does, but only if you turn the whole page upside down, and that is a rotation rather than a reflection. Water flips top to bottom and leaves left and right alone, so a 6 comes back as a backwards 9.

🌟 Why this matters

You see this wherever water sits still. Buildings along a river and streetlights over a wet road come back upside down. Your own face in the bath does the same, with the sides left exactly where they were.
