The Transformer: Standard Length Conversions
Today's big idea
Going to a smaller unit multiplies, and going to a bigger unit divides.
1 yard splits into 3 feet and 1 foot into 12 inches, so each pair has its own number.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
A ruler is one foot long, and it has 12 inches marked along its edge. The same length, described by two different numbers. Every unit change works like that, and the only real question is which way you are going.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the ruler above. One foot and 12 inches are the same distance, so swapping between them means multiplying or dividing by 12. Heading to a smaller unit means more of them fit, so you multiply. Heading to a bigger unit means fewer fit, so you divide. Feet and yards pair up the very same way. One yard is 3 feet, so between those two you multiply or divide by 3 instead of 12. The rule never changes, only the number does: you use whatever number ties the two units together.

- 1.Decide the direction, the way the picture above separates big to small from small to big.
- 2.Bigger unit into smaller, multiply. Smaller unit into bigger, divide.
✍️ Try it
Change 3 feet into inches, change 24 inches back into feet, then change 6 feet into yards. Which ones multiply?
Feet into inches heads to a smaller unit, so multiply: 3 x 12 = 36 inches. Inches into feet heads to a bigger unit, so divide: 24 divided by 12 = 2 feet. Feet into yards also heads to a bigger unit, so divide: 6 divided by 3 = 2 yards. The direction picks the operation, and the pair of units picks the number.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking a bigger number has to mean a longer length. 36 inches and 3 feet are the very same distance. The number only grew because the unit got smaller.
🌟 Why this matters
Height charts, cricket pitches and furniture labels all mix units up. Knowing which way to go stops you ordering a shelf that turns out to be a whole foot too long.
Exam tip: Decide whether the answer should be a bigger or smaller number before you calculate, and a flipped operation shows up straight away.
