The Building Blocks: Points, Lines, Segments, and Rays
Today's big idea
Geometry has four building blocks, told apart by how many ends each one has.
Point is a spot. Segment has 2 ends, ray has 1, and a line has none.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Before you can describe any shape, you need names for the pieces it is built from. Geometry has four of them, and the only thing separating one from another is how many ends it has.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the four blocks above. A point is just a spot, with no length at all. A segment has 2 ends, so it has a real length you could measure. A ray has 1 end and runs on forever the other way. A line has no ends and runs forever both ways.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Count the ends, the way the picture above labels each block.
- 2.Label points with capital letters, so the segment between them is AB.
- 3.Name a ray by its endpoint first, then any other point it passes through.
✍️ Try it
A torch beam starts at the bulb and shines across the room. A pencil lies on your desk with both ends showing. Which block is each one?
The torch beam starts at one point and carries on, so it is a ray. The pencil has two ends you can put a finger on, so it is a segment. Neither one is a line, because a line has to run forever in both directions.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking a line and a segment are the same thing drawn at different sizes. They are not. A 5 cm segment and a 9 cm segment really are different, while every line is the same endless length.
🌟 Why this matters
Road maps, building plans and the edges of this screen are all made of these pieces. Naming them precisely is what lets two people describe one drawing and mean the same thing.
Exam tip: Look for arrowheads in a diagram, because they tell you instantly which block you are being shown.
