Letter Arrangement: Unscramble the Word

Today's big idea

Let the CATEGORY hint pick the word, then check every letter is used exactly once.

Test category words against your exact letters; the one that uses them all wins.

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Jumbled letters look like a wall until you read the hint beside them. The hint tells you what kind of word you are hunting for. From there you are matching, not guessing.

💡 Here's the trick

Look at the letters above. The same five tiles can sit in many orders, yet only one order makes a real animal. The hint cuts a huge pile of orders down to a handful you can test.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Read the hint that sits beside the letters above.
  2. 2.List two or three words from that group in your head.
  3. 3.Test each one, ticking off tiles until every tile is used.

✍️ Try it

Make an animal from A, E, G, L, E. Then make a colour from E, G, R, E, N.

The animal is EAGLE, and all five letters get used. The colour is GREEN, though those same letters also spell genre, which is not a colour.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking the first real word you spot must be the answer. The letters A, E, L, S, T can spell SLATE, STEAL or STALE, and all three are real. Only the hint tells you which one is wanted. Read the hint again before you commit.

🌟 Why this matters

Word games, crossword clues and number plates all reward an eye for hidden words. The same eye helps you spell, because you start to see the shape of a word instead of one letter at a time.
Exam tip: Cross the letters off one by one so you never use a tile twice.
