Concept 3 of 4
Day Calculation: Mod-7 Arithmetic
Today's big idea
Only the remainder after whole weeks moves the day, so divide the day count by 7.
Forward for after, backward for before; the remainder alone will not tell you which.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Your school trip is 60 days away and you want to know which day of the week it lands on. Counting 60 boxes on a calendar takes ages, and one slip ruins the answer. There is a far faster way, because the week repeats itself.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the calendar above. The seven days go round in a loop, so every 7 days you land on the same day again. Only the leftover days after whole weeks can move you, and that leftover is the remainder when you divide by 7.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Count the days to move and find your start day on the calendar above.
- 2.Divide that count by 7 and keep only the remainder.
- 3.Step that many days forward for after, or backward for before.
✍️ Try it
Today is Monday, so which day falls 45 days from today? Then: today is Sunday, so which day was it 30 days before today?
45 days is 6 whole weeks and 3 spare days, so Monday moves forward to Thursday. 30 days is 4 whole weeks and 2 spare days, and going backward from Sunday gives Friday.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking the remainder alone gives the answer, whichever way the question points. It does not. The same remainder of 3 turns Monday into Thursday going forward, but into Friday going back.
🌟 Why this matters
Planning a trip or a family visit means knowing which day a date lands on, and nobody counts squares one by one. Cricket schedules and train timetables run on the same weekly loop.
Exam tip: Circle the words after and before first, because the remainder moves the other way for before.

THE PROBLEM
“If today is Friday, what day is it 30 days from today?”
- 1
Divide by 7
30 ÷ 7 = 4 weeks + 2 days
- 2
Keep the remainder
Skip 2 days forward from Friday.
- 3
Count forward
Fri → Sat → Sun.
- 4
Answer ✓
Sunday
