Line Symmetry: Folding to Match

A line of symmetry folds a shape into two matching halves.

A regular shape has one line of symmetry per side; test each fold, never assume.

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Fold a sheet down the middle, cut a heart, and both halves come out the same. That fold line is doing real work. Shapes that own such a line have line symmetry.

Look at the diagram above. A shape has line symmetry when one fold makes the two halves land exactly on each other. That fold line is called an axis of symmetry. A shape may own none, one, a few, or endlessly many of them. A regular shape has as many axes as it has sides.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Pick a fold line across the shape, like the dashed ones in the diagram above.
  2. 2.Ask whether one half would land exactly on the other half.
  3. 3.Try every direction in turn, then count the fold lines that worked.

How many fold lines does a regular pentagon have? Then: how many fold lines does the capital letter A have?

A regular pentagon has five sides, so it has 5 fold lines. The capital letter A folds only down the middle, so it has just 1.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking that a diagonal of a rectangle is a fold line. Fold a long rectangle along its diagonal and the two halves point different ways. Only the two mid-lines work, which is why a rectangle has 2 axes and not 4.

🌟 Why this matters

Butterflies, faces, leaves and the fronts of cars are close to symmetrical, and designers use that balance on purpose. A logo that sits slightly off looks wrong even when you cannot say why. Folding to check is also how you cut matching shapes from one sheet.
Exam tip: Turn the page in your mind and fold along each direction in turn, then count.
