Pictographs & Bar Graphs: Visual Counts
Today's big idea
Bar graph: read each bar against the scale, and read a pictograph against its key.
Not every scale starts at zero, so check the numbers before you trust a bar height.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Your class votes on a favourite colour and the tally sheet is a mess of marks. Draw it as bars and the winner jumps straight out at you. A graph turns counting into looking.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the graph above. Each bar's height is read against the scale up the side, so Blue is 14. A pictograph does the same job with pictures, and its key tells you what one picture is worth.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Read the scale on the graph above, or read the key on a pictograph.
- 2.Multiply pictures by the key value, or read each bar's top.
- 3.Add for a total, or subtract for how many more.
✍️ Try it
A pictograph key says one star stands for 6 books. A row shows 5 stars, so how many books? Then: bars show Hindi 24 and Tamil 15. How many more Hindi books?
Five stars at 6 books each is 5 × 6 = 30 books. For the bars, 24 − 15 = 9 more Hindi books.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking every bar graph starts its scale at zero. Many do not. Check the numbers up the side, because a bar twice as tall is not always twice as many.
🌟 Why this matters
Match reports, weather charts and shop noticeboards all show their numbers as bars, so you read them in one glance. A pictograph does the same on a poster for younger children.
