How Many More & Total

Subtract for 'how many more', add for 'how many in all'.
8 − 3 = 5 more; 8 + 3 = 11 in all.

For how many more, subtract the two numbers. For how many in all, add every number.
Apples 8 and bananas 3. More apples: 8 − 3 = 5. In all: 8 + 3 = 11.
