Number Names & Expanded Form

Digits, words and expanded form are one number in three outfits.
Every place the words skip still needs a 0 holding it open.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
A shop sign says 3,506. A cheque says three thousand five hundred and six. Your teacher writes 3,000 + 500 + 6. Three different looks, and every one of them is the same number.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the three forms above. Digits, words and the pulled-apart sum are one number wearing three outfits. The comma in 3,506 sits exactly where you say thousand out loud. Look at the tens: nothing is said and nothing is written, but a 0 still has to hold that place.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Read the digits off the forms above in groups: the part before the comma, then the rest.
- 2.Going from words to digits, give every place a digit, writing 0 for any place the words skip.
- 3.To expand, write what each digit is worth and join them with plus signs.
✍️ Try it
Write 5,309 in words. Then write four thousand and sixty in digits.
5,309 is 5 thousands, 3 hundreds, 0 tens and 9 ones, so it reads five thousand, three hundred and nine. The other way round, four thousand and sixty is 4 thousands, no hundreds, 6 tens and no ones, which is 4,060.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking you only write the parts you actually hear. Four thousand and sixty never says hundreds, so it is tempting to write 460. Every place the words skip still needs a 0, or the digits you do have slide into the wrong rooms.
🌟 Why this matters
Notes, cheques and price boards mix words and digits, and you have to move between them without dropping a place. Saying a number out loud and writing it down are two different skills, and this is where they meet.
Exam tip: Word-form questions usually hide an easy sum, so they cost nothing once you can translate.
