Number Line-Up: Comparing & Ordering

Walk from the left: the first place where the digits differ decides it.
Nothing to the right of that first difference can change the answer.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Which is bigger, 4,587 or 4,158? Both open with a 4, so the first digit is no help at all. Comparing has to be a walk, not a glance.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the line-up above. Stack the numbers so their places sit under each other, then walk from the left. The first place where the digits differ decides everything, and nothing to its right can change it. Here the thousands tie, the hundreds tie, and the tens settle it.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Line the numbers up by place, the way the line-up above stacks them.
- 2.Walk from the left, comparing one place at a time.
- 3.Stop at the first place where they differ. The bigger digit there wins.
✍️ Try it
Which is smaller, 6,213 or 6,132? Then put 1,547, 1,425 and 1,552 in ascending order, which means smallest first.
For the pair, the thousands tie and then the hundreds are 2 against 1, so 6,132 is smaller. For the three, all the thousands tie. The hundreds are 5, 4 and 5, so 1,425 goes first. Between the other two the tens differ, 4 against 5, giving 1,425, 1,547, 1,552.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking you should compare from the right, the way you add. Try that on 3,825 against 3,862: the ones are 5 against 2, which points at the wrong answer. Comparing starts on the left, where the places are worth most.
