The Compass: N, E, S, W
Today's big idea
A right turn steps one place clockwise round N, E, S, W, and a left turn steps back.
Left and right depend on the way you face, not on the side of the page.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Someone tells you to turn right and you do it without thinking. Ask which compass direction you now face and the certainty vanishes. The two are the same question, and one rule connects them.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the compass above. The four directions run clockwise as North, East, South, West, and then back to North. A right turn moves you one step clockwise along that ring. A left turn moves you one step the other way. That is the whole rule for a single turn.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Find the direction you start on, using the compass above.
- 2.For a right turn, step to the next direction clockwise.
- 3.For a left turn, step to the one before it instead.
✍️ Try it
You face West and turn right once. Then, separately: you face West and turn left once.
Clockwise from West comes back round to North, so a right turn leaves you facing North. Going the other way from West gives South. The same starting direction sends you to opposite places, which is why the turn word matters.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking left is always towards the left of the page. It is not. Left and right depend on the way you are facing. Face South and your left hand points East, even though East sits on the right of every map you have ever seen.
🌟 Why this matters
Directions are how you follow a route, read a sign, or tell a friend which way to walk without pointing. Locking the clockwise order means you never have to picture the whole compass again.
Exam tip: Sketch a tiny compass in the margin before you answer; it costs seconds and stops a reversed turn.
