Calendar Walker: Days from Now

1

Today's big idea

Whole weeks change nothing, so divide by seven and walk only the remainder.

Peeling the sevens off is wasted if you then forget to walk the leftover days.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Someone asks what day it will be in a hundred days. Counting forward one day at a time would take all afternoon, and you would lose your place. There is a shortcut hiding in the calendar.

💡 Here's the trick

Peel off full weeks, walk only the leftoverSunMonTueWedstartThuFriSatendToday = Wednesday. Walk 3 days.Thu → Fri → SatAnswer: SaturdayBig number? 7 is one full week. Only the leftover matters.

Look at the calendar above. Seven days always lands you back on the same day of the week, so whole weeks change nothing at all. Split the jump into as many sevens as will fit, throw those away, and walk only the small piece that is left over.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Take the number of days and pull out as many sevens as fit, the way the calendar above groups them.
  2. 2.Throw the whole weeks away, since they land on the same day.
  3. 3.Walk forward only the leftover, one day at a time.

✍️ Try it

Today is Friday. What day is it 5 days from now? Then: today is Tuesday, so what day is it 30 days from now?

Five is smaller than seven, so walk it: Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. For the second, 30 is four sevens with 2 left over, so throw away 28 and walk two days from Tuesday to reach Thursday.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking the whole weeks still need counting somewhere. They do not, but the leftover does. Peel 28 off a 30-day jump and then forget the 2, and you will confidently answer Tuesday when the day is really Thursday.

🌟 Why this matters

Working out the date a parcel arrives, or which day a holiday falls on, is exactly this. Once you see that sevens change nothing, even a hundred-day jump is a short walk.
Exam tip: Divide by 7 and keep only the remainder, since that remainder is the entire question.

Watch me solve one

Quanta solves it

“Watch how I think through one of these — then you try.”

THE PROBLEM

“Today is Monday. What day will it be 10 days from now?”

  1. 1

    Split the number

    10 = 7 + 3. The 7 is one full week.

  2. 2

The 7 lands us back on Monday

7 days later = same day = Monday.

  3. 3

    Walk the leftover

3 more days from Monday: Tue → Wed → Thu.

  4. 4

    Answer ✓

10 days from Monday = Thursday

Now you try one — same steps, different story 👇
