Reading the Clock: Hours & Minutes
Today's big idea
The short hand names the hour; the long hand's number × 5 names the minutes.
Both hands have to be read, because one alone gives only half the time.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Two children look at the same clock. One says it is 3 o'clock. The other says it is half past 3. Only one of them read both hands.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the clock above. The short hand sits between 3 and 4, so the hour is 3, the smaller of the two. The long hand points at 6, and 6 × 5 = 30 minutes. That makes it 3:30. Every number the long hand reaches is worth 5 minutes, not 1.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.On the clock above, find the short hand and take the smaller number it sits between.
- 2.Find the long hand and multiply the number it points at by 5.
- 3.Say the hour first, then the minutes, as in 3:30.
✍️ Try it
The short hand sits between 8 and 9 and the long hand points at 4. What time is it? Now a harder one. The short hand sits between 10 and 11 and the long hand points at 9. What time is it, and what is another way to say it?
First clock: the hour is 8, and 4 × 5 = 20, so it reads 8:20. Second clock: the hour is 10, and 9 × 5 = 45, so it reads 10:45. That is 15 minutes before 11, so you can also call it quarter to 11.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking the long hand on 9 means 9 minutes. Count the tiny marks instead. The long hand has passed 45 of them, so it says 45 minutes, not 9.
🌟 Why this matters
Catching a bus, joining a video call and getting to a party all need both hands, not one. A friend who turns up at 4:00 for a 4:30 film waits half an hour on the pavement. The clock on your classroom wall will never spell the time out in words for you.
Exam tip: A clock question often hides a second reading, such as quarter to, so give that one too.
