Concept 3 of 7
Calendar Day-Arithmetic: Skip in 7s
Today's big idea
Weekdays repeat every 7 days, so only the remainder after full weeks moves the day.
Dates one week apart sit in the same column, which is why 7s can be skipped.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Today is Thursday. Someone asks what day it will be in 30 days. Counting 30 days on your fingers takes ages, and one slip ruins the whole answer.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the calendar above. The 1 and the 8 sit in the same column, both under M. That happens because 8 comes exactly 7 days after 1. Every 7 days puts you back on the same weekday, so only the days left over can move the answer.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Find your starting weekday, the way 1 sits under M on the calendar above.
- 2.Divide the number of days you are moving by 7 and keep only the remainder.
- 3.Count that remainder of days forward, or backward, from your starting weekday.
✍️ Try it
Today is Friday. What day will it be in 16 days? Now a harder one. Today is Tuesday. What day was it 20 days ago?
16 ÷ 7 is 2 whole weeks with 2 days left over. Count 2 on from Friday: Saturday, then Sunday. For the second, 20 ÷ 7 is 2 whole weeks with 6 days left over. Count 6 back from Tuesday and you land on Wednesday.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking that going back 6 days lands you where going forward 6 days does. Start on Tuesday and check. Forward 6 gives Monday, but back 6 gives Wednesday. The direction changes everything.
🌟 Why this matters
Working out the day a birthday, a wedding or a school trip falls on saves you hunting for a calendar. It also lets you check a date somebody gives you, because 4 weeks after a Sunday has to be a Sunday again. Once you see the 7s, you stop counting on your fingers.
Exam tip: When the remainder comes out 0 the day does not change at all, and that is the case most children get wrong.
