Number Translators: Standard and Word Forms

Today's big idea

Every number has two outfits, the digits you write and the words you say.

45,300 and 'Forty-Five Thousand, Three Hundred' are one number, twice.

How it works

👀 What's going on?

A cheque, a news headline and an exam question can all mean 45,300 without printing those digits once. They spell it out instead. Numbers wear two outfits, and you need to recognise the same number in both.

💡 Here's the trick

Look at the translator above. The digits 45,300 and the words 'Forty-Five Thousand, Three Hundred' are one amount in two outfits. The comma in the digits is exactly where you say thousand out loud. Read the group before the comma, say thousand, then read whatever is left.

🪄 How to do it

1.Find the comma in the picture above and split the number there.
2.Read the group before the comma, then say thousand.
3.Read the group after it as an ordinary three-digit number.

✍️ Try it

Write 'Sixty Thousand, Four Hundred Nine' in digits. Which rooms have nothing in them?

Sixty Thousand gives 60, then the comma. Four Hundred Nine fills the last three rooms as 409. Together that is 60,409. The thousands and the tens rooms were never mentioned, so a 0 holds each of those places.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking you can write down only the digits you actually hear. There is no tens word in 'Sixty Thousand, Four Hundred Nine', so it is tempting to write 6,049. Every silent room still needs its 0, or all the other digits slide into the wrong rooms.

🌟 Why this matters

Cheques and contracts write amounts in words on purpose, because words are far harder to alter than digits. Being able to swap either way in your head means a wordy number stops looking difficult.
Exam tip: Papers often hide a very easy sum inside word form, purely to see whether you can translate it.
