The Multiplier Engine: Expanded Form
Today's big idea
Every number is secretly a sum of its place-value pieces.
4,572 = 4,000 + 500 + 70 + 2, one piece per room that holds something.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Squashed together, 4,572 is just four digits in a row. Pulled apart, it tells you exactly what it is made of. Expanded form is that pulled-apart version, and it sits underneath almost every big-number method you will meet.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the engine above. The 4 is in the thousands room, so it is 4 x 1,000 = 4,000. The 5 gives 5 x 100 = 500, the 7 gives 7 x 10 = 70, and the 2 gives 2 x 1. Add those four parts back together and 4,572 returns.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Read each digit and its room off the engine in the picture above.
- 2.Multiply every digit by the value of its room.
- 3.Join the parts with + signs, leaving out any room holding a zero.
✍️ Try it
Write 6,030 in expanded form. Two of its rooms are empty, so what happens to those?
The 6 gives 6 x 1,000 = 6,000 and the 3 gives 3 x 10 = 30. So 6,030 = 6,000 + 30. The hundreds and ones rooms hold zeros, and adding 0 changes nothing, so they are simply left out.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking the empty rooms should still appear, written as '+ 0'. They should not, because expanded form only lists what a number is actually made of. Those zeros still matter in the digits though. Drop one and 6,030 collapses into 630.
🌟 Why this matters
Splitting a number into its pieces is how people add prices in their head, thousands first and the small change last. It is also the idea hiding inside every written method for adding and subtracting big numbers.
