Today's big idea
Round to the nearest 100 or 1,000, then add or subtract to check a long answer is reasonable.
4,812 + 3,197 rounds to 5,000 + 3,000 = about 8,000.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Before adding 4,812 and 3,197 exactly, a good mathematician glances at them and says 'about 8,000'. Rounding first gives a target the real answer should land near, and it catches a slipped digit before it becomes a wrong answer.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the rounded numbers above. Round each number to the nearest thousand (or hundred), then add or subtract. 4,812 rounds to 5,000 and 3,197 rounds to 3,000, so the answer is about 8,000 — close to the exact 8,009. An answer of 809 or 80,000 would clearly be wrong.

- 1.Decide the rounding size: nearest 100 for hundreds, nearest 1,000 for thousands.
- 2.Round each number, then add or subtract the tidy numbers.
- 3.Compare your exact answer with the estimate; if they are far apart, hunt for the slip.

Estimate 6,180 − 2,940 to the nearest thousand. Then estimate 3,890 + 5,120.
6,180 rounds to 6,000 and 2,940 rounds to 3,000, so about 3,000. And 3,890 rounds to 4,000 and 5,120 rounds to 5,000, so about 9,000.

Round first, then add. If you do the exact sum and round afterwards, you have already done the hard work you were trying to check.
