The Clone Machine: Repeated Addition
Today's big idea
Multiplication is shorthand for adding the same number over and over.
1,500 three times is 1,500 x 3, and both come to 4,500.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Your class collects 1,500 bottle caps a week for three weeks. You could write 1,500 + 1,500 + 1,500 and add it up. There is a much shorter way to say exactly the same thing.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the clone machine above. The same 1,500 appears three times, so instead of writing it out you write 1,500 x 3. Both come to 4,500. Multiplication is not a new operation at all, it is shorthand for adding one number again and again.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Count how many times the same number repeats, as the picture above counts three.
- 2.Write number x count and work it out once.
✍️ Try it
Work out 600 + 600 + 600 + 600 + 600, then work out 250 added 8 times. Which total is larger?
The 600 repeats 5 times, so that is 600 x 5 = 3,000. The 250 repeats 8 times, so that is 250 x 8 = 2,000. The first one is larger, even though it was added fewer times.
⚠️ Watch out
You might be thinking that more additions must mean a bigger total. Above, five 600s beat eight 250s comfortably. What decides it is the size of the number being cloned, not how many clones there are.
🌟 Why this matters
Equal groups turn up everywhere: seats in rows, sweets in packets, rupees earned each week. Spotting that a story repeats one amount turns a long sum into a single quick product.
