Today's big idea

Look only at the single digit to the right: five or more rounds up, less stays.

Everything past that one neighbour digit is ignored, however large it looks.

How it works

👀 What's going on?

A crowd of 48,217 gets reported as about 48,000 and nobody objects. Rounding is how large numbers get talked about, and it rests on one decision made in one place.

Look at the number above. Find the place you are rounding to, then look at the single digit immediately to its right. Five or more sends the rounding place up by one, four or less leaves it alone. Everything to the right becomes zero.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Underline the place you are rounding to in the number above.
  2. 2.Look at the one digit immediately to its right and nothing else.
  3. 3.Round up on five or more, stay on four or less, then zero the tail.

✍️ Try it

Round 3,46,812 to the nearest thousand. Then round 79,650 to the nearest thousand.

In the first the digit after the thousands is 8, so it rounds up to 3,47,000. In the second it is 6, so 79 thousand becomes 80 thousand, giving 80,000 as the carry rolls over.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking a long tail of big digits should push the rounding up. Only the one neighbouring digit counts. Rounding 2,49,999 to the nearest lakh still gives 2,00,000, because the digit beside the lakhs place is a 4.

🌟 Why this matters

Crowd sizes, distances and money are almost always quoted rounded, and knowing what has been thrown away tells you how much to trust a figure.
Exam tip: Circle the neighbour digit before deciding anything, since that circle is the entire question.
