Word Pairs: Find the Link

1

Today's big idea

Name the link, reuse it

Baby, home, workplace — same link again.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Cat and kitten. Dog and puppy. You feel the link before you can even say it — the second word is the baby of the first. Word analogies are built on links exactly like that.

💡 Here's the trick

Find the link, then match itdogpup::cat?

A word analogy reads A : B :: C : ?. First find the link between A and B — baby, home, the place you work. Then find the word that has the same link with C.

  1. 1.Say the link between the first two words in a short sentence.
  2. 2.Say that same sentence starting with the third word.
  3. 3.The word that finishes it is your answer.

✍️ Try it

  1. 1.Cat : Kitten :: Dog : ?
  2. 2.Bird : Nest :: Bee : ? Pair 1s link is baby of', so a baby dog is a puppy. Pair 2s link is lives in', so a bee lives in a hive.

⚠️ Watch out

Pick the word with the same link, not just any word that fits the topic. For Bird : Nest :: Bee : ?, the word honey is about bees but it is not where a bee lives. The link is lives in, so the answer is hive.

3

See it in action

⚡ Time to play!
