Concept 5 of 5

Rotation & Reversal Codes

1

Today's big idea

Same letters, new order

Read it backwards, or hop the first letter to the end.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

In some codes the letters do not change at all — they just swap places. Read DOG backwards and you get GOD: the very same three letters, stood in a new order. Rotation and reversal codes are all about the ORDER.

💡 Here's the trick

Same letters, new orderCARRACbackwards

A reversal code writes the word backwards (CARRAC). A rotation code moves a letter round — the first letter jumps to the end (CATATC). The letters stay the same; only their order changes. Spot how the example moved, then move the new word the very same way.

  1. 1.Look at the example: which letters moved, and where to?
  2. 2.If it read backwards, write your word backwards too.
  3. 3.If the first letter hopped to the end, hop your word's first letter to the end too.

✍️ Try it

  1. 1.BATTAB, so DOG → ?
  2. 2.CATATC, so SUN → ? The first is backwards, so DOG becomes GOD. The second moves the front letter to the end, so SUN becomes UNS.

⚠️ Watch out

The letters never change — only their order. If you see a brand-new letter in an answer, it must be wrong. Check the example again to be sure you moved the letters the same way.

See it in action

⚡ Time to play!

The letters stay the same — only their order changes. Spot how the example moved, then move the new word the same way.

Which code matches the rule?

✅ VERIFICATION

Backwards code: TOP → POT. Using the same rule, code the word BUS.

⚡ Finish the activity above first to answer.
