Concept 1 of 6
Position in a Row: Left and Right
Today's big idea
Count from the correct end
Left or right — the end changes the answer.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
In the lunch queue you always know your spot: third from the front, or maybe second from the back. A row of anything works the same way — you just have to say which end you are counting from.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the row above. To find a position you pick an end — left or right — and count along from it. Second from the left and second from the right can be two completely different friends, so the end matters.
- 1.Read whether the question counts from the left or the right.
- 2.Put your finger on that end and call it one.
- 3.Count along until you reach the position asked for.
✍️ Try it
- 1.In 🐶 🐱 🐰 🐭 🦊, which animal is 2nd from the left?
- 2.In the same row, which animal is 2nd from the right? From the left, 🐶 is 1st and 🐱 is 2nd. From the right, 🦊 is 1st and 🐭 is 2nd.
⚠️ Watch out
Do not always count from the left out of habit. When the question says from the right, start at the right end, or you will land on the wrong one.
