The Hopping Map: Add by Jumping

Add by hopping along a number line: jump the tens, then the ones.
46 + 37: hop +30 to 76, then +7 to 83.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
You have 46 stickers and win 37 more. You could stack them in columns, or you could just jump forward on a number line.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the picture above. Adding is moving forward. Land on the first number, then hop the tens of the second number, then the ones. Where you land is the total.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Put your marker on the first number.
- 2.Hop forward by the tens of the second number.
- 3.Hop forward by the ones. Read where you land.
✍️ Try it
Hop 52 + 34. Then hop 63 + 25.
52 hop +30 lands on 82, then +4 lands on 86. And 63 hop +20 lands on 83, then +5 lands on 88.
⚠️ Watch out
Hop the tens before the ones, and count each hop carefully so you land on the right ten. 46 + 30 is 76, not 79.
🌟 Why this matters
Hopping builds a picture of adding in your head, so you can add without paper. To subtract, hop the other way, or count up from the smaller number to the bigger one, which is exactly how you work out change at a shop.
