Concept 5 of 9

Adding with Carrying

1

Today's big idea

When the ones pass nine, carry a ten to the tens column.

37 + 25: 7+5=12, write 2 carry 1 → 62.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

37 + 25: the ones make more than 9. Where do the extra ones go?

💡 Here's the trick

137+25627+5=12: write 2, carry 1. Tens 3+2+1=6

When the ones add past 9, carry a ten over to the tens column.

37 + 25: ones 7 + 5 = 12, so write 2 and carry 1. Tens 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. The answer is 62.

✍️ Try it

48 + 26: ones 8 + 6 = 14, write 4 carry 1. Tens 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. → 74.

⚠️ Watch out

The carried ten joins the tens column, so do not forget to add it.

Watch me solve one

Quanta solves it

“Watch how I think through one of these — then you try.”

THE PROBLEM

“Add 48 + 26.”

  1. 1

    Ones pass ten — carry

    8 + 6 = 14, so write 4 and carry 1 ten.148+2674

  2. 2

    Tens, plus the carry

    4 + 2 + 1 = 7.

  3. 3

    Answer ✓

    48 + 26 = 74

Now you try one — same steps, different story 👇
