Equal Groups: Multiplication is Fast Adding

Today's big idea

Equal groups let you add the same number again and again, which is what × means.

3 groups of 2 is 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, the fast way 3 × 2.

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Four bicycles are parked in a row, and each one has 2 wheels. You could count the wheels one by one, but there is a quicker way that grown-ups use every day.

💡 Here's the trick

2 + 2 + 2 = 63 groups of 2 = 3 × 2 = 6

Look at the groups above. Each group has the same number of things. When groups are equal you can add the group size again and again — 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 — or say it the fast way: 4 groups of 2, written 4 × 2. Multiplication is just adding equal groups.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Count how many groups there are.
  2. 2.Count how many are in each group.
  3. 3.Add the group size that many times, or read it as groups × size.

✍️ Try it

  1. 1.3 groups of 2 apples — how many apples?
  2. 2.4 groups of 3 stars — how many stars?

2 + 2 + 2 = 6 apples, which is 3 × 2. And 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 stars, which is 4 × 3.

⚠️ Watch out

The groups must be equal. If one group has 2 and another has 3, you cannot multiply — you have to add them as they are. Multiplication only works for equal groups.

🌟 Why this matters

Equal groups are everywhere — wheels on cars, legs on chairs, cakes in a box. Multiplying saves you from counting the same thing over and over.
Exam tip: Read '4 groups of 2' as 4 × 2, and add 2 four times to check.
