Sharing Equally: Division

Sharing equally deals a set out one each until it is gone; the amount each gets is the answer.
6 biscuits between 2 plates is 3 each, so 6 ÷ 2 = 3.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Two friends, six biscuits, and a rule everyone agrees on: share them fairly so nobody grumbles. Sharing equally is the everyday face of division.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the pile above and the children sharing it. To share equally you deal them out one at a time, going round and round, until they are gone. How many each child ends up with is the answer: 6 shared among 2 is 6 ÷ 2 = 3.
🪄 How to do it
- 1.Count how many things there are in total.
- 2.Count how many people are sharing.
- 3.Deal them out equally; the number each person gets is the answer.
✍️ Try it
- 1.Share 6 biscuits among 2 children — how many each?
- 2.Share 12 sweets among 3 friends — how many each?
6 ÷ 2 = 3 biscuits each. And 12 ÷ 3 = 4 sweets each.
⚠️ Watch out
Everyone must get the same amount. If one child has more than another, the sharing is not equal, and it is not division.

Fair sharing settles snacks, teams and turns. It is the first and friendliest way to meet division.
