Concept 6 of 6

Fraction of a Group

1

Today's big idea

A fraction of a group: split into equal shares, count one.

6 apples in 2 equal shares — half of 6 is 3.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Half of 6 sweets — how many sweets is that?

💡 Here's the trick

Half of a group of 63 apples3 appleshalf of 6 = 3

A fraction can name part of a group, not just part of one thing. To find half of a group, split it into 2 equal shares.

6 apples split into 2 equal shares is 3 and 3, so half of 6 is 3.

✍️ Try it

There are 8 balloons and half of them are red. How many are red? → 4.

⚠️ Watch out

Split the group into equal shares first, then count just one share.
