Animal Analogies: Young, Home & Sound

1

Today's big idea

Name the link between A and B out loud, then run that same link on C.

Young, home and sound are the three animal links Class 3 papers keep using.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

Ask anyone what a baby cow is called and they will say calf without pausing. Ask how they knew and they will struggle. There is a rule underneath, and these questions are built on making that rule say itself out loud.

💡 Here's the trick

A : B :: C : ?🐱Cat🐈Kittenyoung🐶Dog🐕Puppysame!

Look at the pair above. Cat goes with Kitten because a kitten is a young cat, and the same link carries across to Dog and Puppy. An analogy is written A : B :: C : ?. The job is to name the link between A and B, then apply it to C. In this chapter the animal links are young, home and sound.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Look at the pair above and ask what links A to B.
  2. 2.Say the link out loud as a sentence, such as B is the young of A.
  3. 3.Ask that same sentence about C, and the answer fills the gap.

✍️ Try it

Work out Sheep : Lamb :: Goat : ? Then try Lion : Roar :: Snake : ?

A lamb is a young sheep, so the link is young of, and a young goat is a Kid. In the second pair the link is the sound it makes, and a snake makes a Hiss.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking any true fact about the pair will do. It will not. Cow : Calf :: Dog : Kennel looks fine until you say the link out loud. A calf is the young of a cow, but a kennel is a home, not a young. The link has to be the same on both sides.

🌟 Why this matters

Knowing that a baby goat is a kid, that bees live in a hive, and that a snake hisses is ordinary nature knowledge. Naming the link is what turns scattered facts into something you can reason with.
Exam tip: Say the link aloud before you read the options, or the options will talk you into the wrong one.

Quanta solves it

“Watch how I think through one of these — then you try.”

THE PROBLEM

“Cat : Kitten :: Dog : ?”

  1. 1

    Find the link between A and B

    Cat → Kitten: a kitten is the young of a cat.

  2. 2

    Name the rule out loud

    The rule is: B is the YOUNG of A.

  3. 3

    Apply the SAME rule to C

    Young of Dog = ?

  4. 4

    Answer ✓

    = Puppy

Now you try one — same steps, different story 👇
