Worker & Tool: Object Analogies

1

Today's big idea

A worker pairs with the tool they work with, not the place or the material.

Workplace and material are the two wrong answers offered almost every time.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

A painter reaching for a brush, a carpenter reaching for a saw. Every job has one tool that comes to mind before all the others. That pairing is what this kind of question is built on.

💡 Here's the trick

Worker → main tool🎨Painter🖌️Brushtool👷Carpenter🪚Sawsame link!

Look at the pair above. Painter goes with Brush because a brush is the main tool of a painter, and Carpenter goes with Saw for the same reason. Say that link out loud and the second half answers itself. The link here is always worker to main tool, never worker to workplace and never worker to material.

🪄 How to do it

  1. 1.Look at the pair above and check whether B is the tool A works with.
  2. 2.Say the link out loud: the main tool this worker uses.
  3. 3.Ask which tool C reaches for first.

✍️ Try it

Work out Doctor : Stethoscope :: Photographer : ? Then try Blacksmith : Hammer :: Woodcutter : ?

A photographer works with a Camera, so the first pair holds. A woodcutter swings an Axe, which matches a blacksmith and a hammer.

⚠️ Watch out

You might be thinking anything connected to the worker counts. Carpenter : Wood is a true connection, but wood is what a carpenter works on, not what they work with. Put it into Painter : Brush :: Carpenter : Wood and the two halves stop matching.

🌟 Why this matters

Knowing who uses what is how you make sense of a workshop, a kitchen or a hospital without being told. It also makes an unfamiliar job easier to understand, because you look for the tool first.
Exam tip: The options usually include the workplace and the material, and both are there to catch a guess.

Watch me solve one

Quanta solves it

“Watch how I think through one of these — then you try.”

THE PROBLEM

“Painter : Brush :: Carpenter : ?”

  1. 1

    Find the link

Painter → Brush: a painter's main tool is a brush.

  2. 2

    Name the rule

The rule is: worker → main TOOL.

  3. 3

    Apply it to Carpenter

    Carpenter's main tool = ?

  4. 4

    Answer ✓

    = Saw

Now you try one — same steps, different story 👇
