Concept 2 of 6
The Odd Category
Today's big idea
Name the group, find the stranger
Three belong together — one does not.
How it works
👀 What's going on?
Apple, banana, grapes, dog. One of those is not like the others, and you knew which before you finished reading. Your brain sorted them into fruits and not a fruit all by itself.
💡 Here's the trick
Look at the four pictures above. Three belong to the same group — they are all fruits, or all animals, or all things you wear. The odd one belongs to a different group.
- 1.Look at all four pictures.
- 2.Name the group that most of them share (fruits, animals, toys…).
- 3.The picture that is not in that group is the odd one out.
✍️ Try it
- 1.🦁 🐘 🐵 🍎 — which is odd?
- 2.🚗 🚌 🚲 🍌 — which is odd?
Set 1 is three animals and one fruit (🍎). Set 2 is three vehicles and one fruit (🍌).
⚠️ Watch out
More than one answer can feel possible until you name the group. Once you say these are all animals, the odd one is clear. Always name the group first.
