Concept 8 of 8

Cube Counting

1

Today's big idea

Count every cube

Even the hidden ones.

2

How it works

👀 What's going on?

A little tower of blocks looks simple — until you realise one cube is hiding behind the others! Counting cubes means counting the ones you cannot fully see too.

💡 Here's the trick

Count them all — even the hidden one= 5

In a stack of cubes, some cubes sit behind or under the others, so you can only see part of them (or none at all). To count correctly, imagine the whole stack and include every cube — even the hidden supporters.

  1. 1.Count the cubes you can see clearly.
  2. 2.Look for a cube peeking out behind — that is a hidden one.
  3. 3.Remember: a cube on top must be resting on a cube below.

✍️ Try it

Four cubes make a square on the floor and one more sits on top. That is 5 cubes — even though the back cube is half hidden behind the front ones.

⚠️ Watch out

A cube on top always needs a cube underneath to hold it up. If you see a raised cube, there is a hidden one below it — do not forget to count it.
